Womens Lacrosse Has Arrived!
Last year, some intense efforts were underway to get womens lacrosse moving in Waukee. A student that had moved from the East Coast was working hard to introduce the sport just as the boys program (
Valley) was taking off. Unfortunately she moved to Delaware over the summer, leaving the program in limbo. Fortunately, the program has new life in the form of Coach Jaacki McKinney! Now an official club team at
Waukee High School, 32 interested girls attended the first meeting. A practice schedule starts this week and spring games are being set up.
While the team is only open to Waukee students, Coach Jaacki is allowing girls from other school districts to attend practices. She is also encouraging women that are interested in learning to play lacrosse to attend. Hopefully a few of these women will step up to coach additional metro teams. Effectively spreading the sport relies on eager volunteers willing to learn the game.
Coach Jaacki is also leading a small group of women hoping to form a full team soon. The group plans to participate in regional tournaments against other post-collegiate teams. Perhaps a few of the future high school coaches will join the team...
