Professional Box Lacrosse is Coming to Des Moines
Sunday September 20, 2009
Just weeks after registration opened for the inaugural Central Iowa Lacrosse Association
Open Box Lacrosse League, I learned that the
Minnesota Swarm will be playing a preseason game at Wells Fargo Arena. While an official announcement has not yet been made, I have been given permission to provide a few details about the event.
The
Iowa Hakeyes will play a box lacrosse game against the
Iowa State Cyclones on the turf at Wells Fargo Arena before the Swarm game. This will be the first official box lacrosse meeting of the two teams and the second time overall they will meet this school year. Former
Valley Tigers Luc Jacobs and Ben Couch are currently playing with Iowa and ISU, respectively. Although Iowa's schedule has them otherwise finished with fall ball on October 23, ISU will have a winter full of lacrosse as they participate in the OBLL.
Valley may have an opportunity to play a short demonstration game during halftime. The game will be short. It will most likely include team members that are participating in the OBLL. The coaching staff will each run a team wearing either the black or white varsity uniforms. Details and criteria for the halftime game are still being ironed out.
During the game itself, the Swarm will be hosting the Colorado Mammoth. The teams are the league's closest to Des Moines and feature a wealth of talent, including the third overall draft pick Zach Greer. Greer was a standout during his time at Duke before using his NCAA granted extra year of eligibility to transfer to Bryant University as a graduate student.
The official time has not been released, but expect the game to start during the 7:00 hour. Further details, including the start time and ticket information, will be posted on our dedicated
Minnesota Swarm page as it becomes available.
10/2/09 Update: The Swarm Game will start at 7:00 pm
